DR DANILO UROŠEVIĆ: SERBS IN HUNGARIAN CAMPS 1944-1945 IN BARČ AND ŠARVAR
After lengthy preparations, a book by Dr. Danil Urošević about the internment of Serbs from Bačka in camps in Hungary during World War II has been published. The book was published in Serbian and Hungarian under the title “Serbs in the Hungarian Camps, 1941-1945 – in Barč and Sárvár, or “Szerbek a barcsi és sárvári internálótáborban, 1941-1945” published by the Serbian Self-Government in Budapest, the “Zora” Association (Budapest) and the Archives of Vojvodina. Pera Lastić and Zoltan Bada from the Serbian Institute professionally edited the manuscript and edited the publication. The Institute was also one of the co-financiers of the publication of this noteworthy publication. "The book before us is not a monographic treatment of the topic of the internment of Serbs from Bačka, but rather a narrative embedded in a credible historical context, and at the same time it also presents a summary overview of the events related to this topic, which is very correctly and announced in the subtitle (of the Hungarian edition) of the book - written by Dr. Danilo Urošević based on his own memories and professional literature. Since there has been a significant interest in this topic recently, I hope that the commendable work of the author and editor will provoke lively reactions and contribute to the historical understanding of these events. Hungarian readers will have the opportunity to become acquainted with these tragic moments of the World War from the perspective of the population of the other (Serbian) side as well, and the importance of this fact cannot be overemphasized. Namely, without getting to know the point of view of the other side, the idea of the poet Attila Józef from the poem "On the Banks of Tobacco" could never have been realized: "The struggle waged by our ancestors/ memory will turn into a soothing peace/ and to resolve our common concerns finally/ that is our job; and not a small one" From the review of Čaba Katona (Budapest) "The book by Dr. Danilo Urošević is one of the useful books that analyzes and reminds us of this obscure and limited topic about the suffering of Serbian civilians, especially colonists settled between the two world wars in Bačka, during its occupation from 1941 to 1944. In this way, Urošević presents this historical event to the Hungarian and Serbian public, giving his view for recognition and judgment (…). The book will influence the expansion of the circle of knowledge about the historical fate of Serbian colonial communities in Bačka, for whom the suffering in 1941 and the internment in Šarvar permanently marked their national identity.
