Visoki Decani Monastery (Visiko Dečani Monastery)

The popular edition of "Visiko Dečani Monastery" in various languages is the result of the collective work of the monks of that monastic community. The original text in Serbian was translated into Hungarian by Father Vojislav Galić from Szentendre, the bishop's deputy of the Diocese of Buda. The book, with its many color illustrations, acts as a church baedeker for visitors from the circle of tourists and lovers of Orthodox sacred art.

The monastery was founded by King St. Stefan Uroš III (Dečanski) on the banks of the Bistrica River and under the steep slopes of Mount Prokletije on the Serbian-Albanian border. The Serbian Orthodox Church honors and celebrates Stefan Uroš of Dečanski as a martyr, whose feast day is November 11 according to the Julian calendar and November 24 according to the Gregorian calendar.

The book has the following chapters: History of the Monastery; Monastery Buildings; Church of the Ascension of the Lord; Treasury of the Decani Monastery; Life in the Monastery.

The richly illustrated book, in addition to the beautiful architecture of the master Fra Vita and the world-famous wall paintings, also provides insight into the daily work of people who have chosen the monastic life. In addition to regular liturgies and prayers, the monks spend most of the day performing all practical tasks as a sign of obedience. The abbot determines the schedule of all tasks and activities, which are indispensable for serving the monastery community.

The Hungarian language version was published in 2009.

Copies of the book can be purchased at the premises of the Serbian Institute.
