BELA BARTOK: SERBIAN AND BULGARIAN PEASANT MUSIC FROM BANAT (1935) – 2017

Facsimile edition of Bartok's autograph of the sheet music collection Publisher: The "Vujičić" Association in cooperation with the Serbian Institute Editor: Gabor Eredić Collaborator: Pera Lastić Budapest, 2017 Béla Bartok converted his phono-recordings of Serbian folk music from Banat into sheet music in 1935 and prepared them for printing, but he only managed to reproduce them on tracing paper in ten copies. These recordings were printed for the first time in one of the volumes of Bartok's complete works in 1971. The "Vujičić" ensemble, having become acquainted with Bartok's recordings of Serbian folk music, sought in the early 2000s to publish a facsimile edition of Bartok's autograph. The “Vujičići” achieved a definitive success last year when, after publishing a collection of works on Bartok and Serbian music, the Serbian Institute decided to finally give readers the basic material of what the contributions in that collection of works talk about. Bartok’s “Serbian and Bulgarian Peasant Music” contains the musical notation written by Bela Bartok himself of 21 Serbian and 7 Bulgarian (from the Banat town of Vinga) melodies. These musical notations are absolutely clean, legible and clear and can be used by musicians to perform the melodies. At the end of this volume of just over 40 pages, there is also a prominent work by the director of the Bartok Archive, László Vikariś, in which the history of the creation of the notation as well as the place of these notations in Bartok’s ethnomusicological opus is precisely given. Vikariś’s afterword was published bilingually: in Hungarian and in Serbian translation. Translation into Serbian: Nada Hajdžan Expert assistance: Jelena Jovanović (Institute of Musicology, SASA) Financial assistance: Institute of Musicology, FC MAN, Serbian Minority Self-Governments in Erzsébetváros, Zuglo and the Serbian Orthodox Church. The collection of works “Béla Bartók and Serbian Music” in Serbian and Hungarian and the facsimile edition of the sheet music collection, autographed by Béla Bartók, together make up a representative publication dedicated to a very important segment of Serbian-Hungarian cultural ties.
