Serbs in Hungary 2004-2014: 10 years in the EU – international expert conference on minority research

The Serbian Institute's project to organize an expert conference on the social and legal position of Serbs in Hungary in relation to other minorities in Hungary and surrounding countries, as well as in Serbia, chronologically and in relation to the European Union, has been approved.

Since its inception, the Serbian Institute has been successfully organizing international professional conferences every year. The aim of previous conferences has been to prepare research in certain scientific fields (ethnology, linguistics, history). In addition, smaller events, workshops and round tables have been held on a current topic or anniversary. The series of conferences continues in 2014 as the next step after the scientific fields covered (demography, sociology, law, politics, political science), and on the other hand, it responds to current events in society (population census, minority elections, the impact of joining the European Union on the position of minorities). When covering the topic, we used a comparative and dynamic approach, as the most effective method.

The two-day conference, planned for October 2014, will be held in the event hall of the State Serbian Self-Government.

The planned program includes the following topics: population movement, sociological, demographic indicators, identity indicators based on the population census (2001, 2011), political representation, legal status, cultural autonomy, church life, the status of the Serbian language, the status of the media, education and protection of minorities in Europe 2004-2014.
